Reading Lately in July...
Get lost in the photography of Melburnian Brooke Holm...whip up a pair of pom-pom sunglasses with Miss Zali...and a circus that arrives with no warning...otherwise known as things I'm reading lately....
Brooke Holm's name was already on my radar but the reason hadn't 100% clicked with me until I browsed the `back issues' of her blog. Here I discovered her photography in places & campaigns that I've naturally gravitated towards without knowing it was her...Kikki K, Frankie...and of course The Design Files which is where I really pricked up my ears and went looking for her blog. Speaking of back issues, is there anything better than discovering a new blog and having a little `pile' of previous posts to consume all in one go (much like a Nutella snack pack or three) without having to wait for new ones? It's one of my most favourite things. If you can get that moment to coincide with wearing slippers on a weekend without a timetable you've pretty much achieved the trifecta :) I can't go past food, design or travel photography at the best of times...but here it's all combined in a delicious package with some shots of her life thrown in for good measure. I like the way she includes shoes in her photos...and the way she deconstructs food imagery. Her latest New Zealand post...honestly how could you not want to visit after seeing that. I could almost hear the sound of the wind howling around those peaks & the crunch of pine needles...and the miles of air and emptiness. But I digress...in short, beautiful...subscribe :) Then watch this stop motion video she made of her workshop...
How crazy cute is this blog by Miss Zali? She's 13 and I love her fresh & honest approach to blogging. Plus, she loves Posca pens...which I was obsessed with back in the day (purple and gold were my favourites) and she's hooked on Blank Goods...so she has pretty awesome taste. She posts about her favourite outfits...DIY's like the pom-pom sunglasses above...her own illustrations and random looks into things like the contents of her pencil case (aka what she uses for her artwork). Check out this sweet little animation of her paper doll family...love your work Zali :)
In other news, I've moved onto a new book...The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern:
"The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will...."
I've heard nothing but raves...I started reading it in a medical waiting room which is never the best scenario in which to start a book. You can't really expect to be consumed by the writing when you're secretly scanning the room wishing the person in the corner with the coughing fit wasn't sending a little flotilla of germs your way....or is that just me? :) In any case, I'll be sure to tell you if I fall in love with it soon!
Any new reads (blogs or otherwise) you're loving lately? Be sure to share via comments or the social media links. ..I'm always looking for new ideas to add to my list!
